Cultural Exchange at the Hawaii Festival of Pacific Arts & Cultures

In 2016, Director Sayun traveled to Guam at her own expense to participate in the Festival of Pacific Arts & Cultures. She brought her works with the hope of connecting with local filmmakers. However, due to scheduling errors and a lack of connections, she was unable to find the right people to reach out to. After the establishment of Taiwan's first Indigenous Film Academy in August 2022, we recognized that in addition to empowering and supporting filmmakers, building international connections is one of our most important missions. Oceania, sharing a common island culture, is the first step we aim to take.

The Festival of Pacific Arts & Cultures, held every four years, was delayed for eight years due to the pandemic and will return in 2024 in Hawaii. In 2023, Director Sayun visited Hawaii to engage with local film-related organizations and Indigenous filmmakers, conducting preliminary preparations and field surveys. These efforts aim to bring students from the Indigenous Film Academy, along with two Amis directors and producers, to the Hawaii Pacific Arts Festival in 2024 to deepen their understanding and foster connections with Oceania's filmmaking community.

As part of these efforts, we organized three screenings and discussion sessions: one at the Honolulu Museum of Fine Arts, a discussion during the Hawaii Film Festival, and another screening and discussion event for Micronesia Day.
